Inevitable...

Well, after a lot of thought, I've decided to give up on the podcast. As I said in the last post, after I ended up going at it solo, it just wasn't as fun to do by myself. The old shows are gone from the old server, which kinda sucks, but I didn't see the point in paying to keep them going since they are all based on old news. I will from time to time post story's on the world of filesharing here on the blog when I think it's something worth a go, but for the most part, I'm done. Thank you to all who ever listened to and supported the show, I know Bryan and Kyp appreciated it, as did I. Plus a special thanks to the people over at Bitlord, who made the breif video cast possible, and a very special thanks to Ernesto over at Torrentfreak.com, who came up with the TorrentPod show, and managed to put up with me and my crappy laptop week to week. Maybe one day you'll see me on some other show if i ever come up with a format I'm happy with, but until then, it's been a fun ride. - CJ -

Changes to the show..

Hey everyone, Charlie here. I'm sure if your a regular listener of the show, you'll have noticed that nothing new has come out for some time now. To put it plain and simple, I'm kinda tired of the formats of both shows. Pod2peer was always supposed to be with more than one person, and when Bryan and Kyp left, it was never really the same, nor anywhere as near as fun to do solo. I've always loved doing pod casts, but I've realized doing them by myself is just so-so when it comes to fun. Torrentpod is fun to do, but the format was based off the pod2peer format, and the solo thing just isn't working for me the way I'm currently doing it. So, time for a change. Now, granted, theres not much you can do with a news show, but I have a few ideas I've been playing around with, Including the possibility of video, which I did with the bitlord show, and I really had a lot of fun with that. Now if any of you out there have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. As always, you can reach me over at pod2peer@gmail.com, or here in the comments. Where The Hell Have We Gone?

Hello everybody, long time no see. Charlie here. I'm sure some of you, or mabye even none of you have been wondering what the hell has been going on with the pod2peer, and even the TorrentPod show's. Well, to sum it up, life happened. My cohorts on pod2peer, as most know, retired from the show, cause lts face it, it took a lot of time and effort to do. I tried to keep it going, but I was dealing with my wife, now my ex, and all her drama, and just didn't have the time. TorrentPod stopped coming for the same reason, but thankfully, if you hop on over to torrentfreak, you'll see they ended up with a cool little video show. Since I went on hiatus I have been getting m life back in order, dealing with time with the kids and all the fun stuff that divorce involves. It was a rough road, but I'm happy to say that i'm back to normal finally, and have really been thinking about doing the show again. Now, I just recieved word that my host, switchpod, is migrating into lybsin, and if all goes smoothly, there shouldn't be too many hiccups if your looking to grab an older episode. After the migration, I will be looking into setting up the show, gotta find all my old files and stuff for doing the show. And for thoes who have been keeping up on the show, for some god only knows reason, even after a year and a half, were still pulling in over 10,000 downloads a month, which is not only cool, but odd. Episode 13, and a few changes...

Well, episode 13, our latest full show is out, featuring both me (Charlie) and Bryan. Now, if you've seen the last post here in the blog, you'll see that Bryan has left us. We didn't know about it at the time we recorded episode 13, or we would have given him the send-off he deserved, but somtimes things dont always work out the way they ought to. We all wish Bryan the best at whatever he does, and want him to know that he will always have a home here in the blog, and on our show.

Now, that being said, it becomes obvious that we are going to have to make some changes here on the show. I have been diligently brainstorming and have come up with a new format for the full show. Expect a new mini episode out soon that will spell out some details on what to expect with our full show format. I'll give you a hint now though, it's going to be a lot more interactive with outside sources, and VERY feedback freindly. Keep an ear out for mini episode 3 for more details. Ep 12 and mini 1 and 2

Howdy all, sorry it's been so long since I posted, but I've been busy. Let's get into the AVS tip from episode 12.
Now what we coverd was temporalsoften, and what the standard numbers for this command looklike are this:

TemporalSoften(4,4,8,15,2)

or, if your using the video= command in front of your command lines, you'll use this as a standard code:

Video=TemporalSoften(video,4,4,8,15,2)

Now this set of numbers will give you a basic blur to your encode, which isn't too heavy on the blur/soften scale, but will help rid some small pixelation. You can raise the values to adjust for more softening or bluring effect to help out in a lower bitrate encode. This may a bit too techy, but a more desriptive explination of what all the number effect is this:

TemporalSoften(clip clip, int radius, int luma_threshold, int chroma_threshold [, int scenechange] [, int mode])

The clip clip, represent the video command you would stick in if your using the Video= parameter.

Now for our next full ep (13) we will be showing you how to use AVS in an actual encode. Were going to be covering a KVCD encode, which is a vcd (mpeg-1) video encode. KVCD is a good encode process to know beacuse most standalone dvd players will play vcd video when it doesnt play ripped or re-encoded dvd's or svcd's. The bonus to KVCD is that you can fit an entire movie on one regular 700mb cd, without any real quality loss, when done correctly.
For this encode were going to use a program called HCEncoder v0.17, and you can find it on doom9 at this link
Keep an eye on this blog entry just in case we think of anything else you might need.

A Vacation?

Hey there guys and gals. I'm sure a few of you are wondering what happened to last weeks episode. Well, scheduling mostly. With all three of us on diffrent sides of the planet, every once in a while we run into a situation where we can't record. Not to worry though, episode 12 will be getting recorded, as we are now back on track after our little vacation from last week. Expect to see it when you normally would on a new release, which is usually late friday, or saturday, depending on where you live. Once again, sorry for the 1 week hiatus, but it coudln't be helped. - CJ

Episode 11

Hey there. Sorry i'm so late posting this, but i've been swamped with way too much stuff to do, and I forgot,(basically I got a new dirt bike) So, now that i've found some time in front of the puter, i'm here ta dish out episode 11's AVC tip. Merging seperate audio and video sources.

So what we have thus far is this:

directshowsource("C:\Documents and Settings\pod2peer\Desktop\test\test.avi",fps=xx.xx)
autocrop(0)
bilinearresize(xxx,xxx)

What we are now going to do is seperate the audio and video. In this case we're going to assume we are using a .d2v source file created with dgindex. You can still use directshowsource if you have an avi source and a seperate audio you'd like to use, but be sure that the video doesnt have any audio on it.
Now, in order to make AVS accept a video file with a .d2v extension, we have to use a diffrent command instead of directshowsource. the command were going to use is "mpeg2source", and beacuse a .d2v file doesnt contain any audio in it, we are going to use the extracted audio file that dgindex gave us when it created the .d2v file.
Now beacuse we are using a seperated audio and video source, we need to let AVS know that it needs to merge them back together for playback, and in order to do that, we need to let it know which of our files is audio, and which is video, and we also need to inform it what our filters are going to be used on. Try saying that three times real fast.
OK, so in order to let AVS know what it needs to know, we are going to enter two simple commands in front of our existing commands. They are:

Video=
and
Audio=

Simple huh? So now our script should look something like this:

Video=mpeg2source"C:\Documents and Settings\pod2peer\Desktop\test\test.d2v")
Video=autocrop(video,0)
Video=bilinearresize(video,xxx,xxx)
audio=DirectShowSource("C:\Documents and Settings\pod2peer\Desktop\hg\testaudio.ac3")

A couple things to notice that are diffrent in this new command line structure.
First, you'll notice that we are now using the .d2v file extension instead of the .avi, and that we are no longer usinf the "fps=" command at the end of the video source command line. This is beacuse we arent using .avi, were using .d2v, and the lack of "fps=" is beacuse .d2v file extensions dont need to have the fps parameters defined, AVS can read thoes all by itself. Also you'll notice that the audio is labeled as a .ac3 file, this is beacuse dgindex, when ripping a dvd, will extract the audio as .ac3. Now sometimes it will dish out a .wav file, for that, you simply use the .wav extension at the end of the command line instead.
Another thing to notice, is that now, inside each command, where we enter in our value's, you will see an audio or video inserted in along with the commands, this is to further assist AVS in showing what it needs to do with these commands. If you don't enter in the correct audio or video for your audio or video command, then AVS wont know what to do with that command, and will send you a warning message asking what that command means.
Now that we have told AVS that we have seperate audio and video sources, we want to tell it to merge it all together in one complete video. For this we use the "walla" command, and it looks a bit like this:

walla=audiodub(video, audio)
return walla

What this is telling AVS is to use the walla filter to merge the audio and video in the audiodub tag. You put in the "return walla" command to close out the command. So now our latest AVS script should look like this:

You should be able to copy and paste that to your notepad if your confused, and then simply change the path to the correct spot on your hard drive where the audio and video files are located, and of course, if you filenames are diffrent, you change thoes as well.

Episode 10

Howdy ho! Episode ten is now out, which means we have some more AVS to dish out, so let's get started. So this week we coverd cropping, Which has two relatively basic commands. One is a manual crop, where you enter the cropping value's yourself, and the other is autocrop, where AVS will enter the cropping values automatically for you. We'll cover the basic crop command first. It should look like this:

Crop(xx,xx,-xx,-xx)

the actual default value for crop is defined like this:

Crop(0,0,-0,-0)

No the way each number work is:

Crop(Left,Top,Right,Bottom)

Basically all you need to do is enter in the value of how mauch you want taken out of the movie, which is usually the black bars you see on the top and bottom. So let's, for an example, assume we wanted 180 pixels removed from top and bottom, it would look something like this:

Crop(0,180,0,-180)

Now, with the autocrop command it's much simpler, you simply tell it to auto crop and it chooses the values automatically. Autocrop will be written like this:

Autocrop(0)

Pretty simple huh? Now sometimes autocrop will over crop your video file, when this happens you then revert to the standard crop and enter the values manually. A trick to seeing what it is you want cropped is to enter in the autocrop command like this:

Autocrop()

When you leave out the "0", it will make the autocrop command show what value's it is cropping, so when you start your video, you will see the actual cropping values posted on the video in your viewing screen. You can then take thoes values, write them down and use the normal crop command and adjust it accordingly untill you get the desired crop you want.

Ok, now onto the meat an potatoes. Ep 10 coverd the recent news of the raids on warez providers, and the EMI's take on Frances filesharing bill proposal, plus a few other snippets of the past weeks news. We responded to some of our email feedback, and we finally got our first voicemail, and have dubbed the caller of that lovely reply as the offical Pod2Peer Redneck. If you wanna know more about it, your gonna have to listen to the show.

We'd also like to ask that all thoes not already subscribed to the show to go ahead and get subscribed, that way when a new show comes out, your computer will automatically download it for you. The easiest way to do this is to click on the podcastpickle logo to your right, and on our page there at the pickle, in the upper left hand corner, you'll see an itunes logo. Just click that and it will auto subscribe you to the show. Now how can it get any easier then that? Pod2peer Episode 9

Well, nine is out. Sadly, we had some technical (if you can call it that) difficulties with this ep. Kyp was forced to drop out beacuse of some noise issues where he lives, which was a real bummer, especially since I, and i'm sure all of you, were really looking forward to his input on our weekly AVS lesson. Since he is our resident professional in AVS, i'm afraid I was stuck trying to hold the reins alone on this one. I did manage to give you some really basic commands, but whatever I might have missed in this ep will be coverd by Kyp as makeup in the next one. Right, so here are the two command lines we learned this week as promised. First, we have bicubicresize, whcih should look like this:

Bicubicresize(xxx,xxx)

Simply replace the x's with the framesize you desire, for example "480,352". Remember, you want to use the bicubic command for upsizing a video.

Next we have bilinearresize, and it should look like this:

Bilinearresize(xxx,xxx)

Once again, replace the x's with your desired framesize. Another example, "352,240"
And this command is used to downsize you video framesize.

Remember, you only want to use one of these commands. So, now our avs script file should look like this:

directshowsource("C:\Documents and Settings\CJ\Desktop\test\test.avi",fps=xx.xx)
bilinearresize(xxx,xxx)

Next week we'll be covering cropping, to get out them annoying black bars from your video feed. It would help if you could find a mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 video source, but its not nessasary, the avi file will still work, you just wont be able to see the loss of black bars if it doesnt have any in it.

In this ep we cover a couple news story's concerning NCC concerns over DRM management, and the US government probing search engines about porn. We dish out another japanese word of the week, give you the top ten most downloaded files, and run through our regular amount of bs. Okay guys and gals, episode 8 is out and ready for grabbing. As we discussed in this most recent episode, i'm going to post an example for our first AVS lesson. This is basically what you should be seeing when you type your command

Now where you see the path, i.e C:\Documents and Settings\CJ\Desktop\test your going to copy and pate YOUR path from YOUR drive, not mine which is the one shown here. Then where it says xx.xx for the fps= command, you will need to replace thoes with the correct frames per second value, which as I said in the show, if you can't find it, run through it with each of these values till one works where it runs without causing the audio to go out of sync

You can always get the free copy of virtualdub, which you can google to find, and then pop your video into that, and then look under the video tab for the fps information, pretty simple stuff.

Dear Supporters,

When I decided not to accept a settlement with the RIAA it was of course because "I did not ever download or make available for mass distribution any music files" end of story. It seems to have become the beginning of a story. I learn something new everyday that makes me realize how wrong the "sue em all campaign" is. The most important thing I learned (besides not to stutter when speaking in public) is that most people know and respect the difference between right and wrong. The support that you have given me reminds me that I am not alone with how I feel about these lawsuits and I cannot thank you enough for that. I was recently at a point that I thought it just did not matter what I believed and that the laws were not going to be on my side. It was the positive response from all of you that changed my mind about giving up.

Our Merry Christmast show... In this episode we talk about pizza hut japan, of course the japanese word of the day (unfortunately, we found out that Confucius is actually dead, and it was a fraud on our show) a-la Bryan, encoding tips via The FilmMachine, top 10s, Apple taking over the online trade, limewire's new spam and fake file filters, and apparently, the downfall of peer2peer filesharring.... i guess they had to tell us about that one... Our sever that we host the show on is currently switching it's servers to another DNS, they say it will only take a day so if you cant get a hold of any of the episodes, this is why. The new server should be up soon, and then you should be able to get access to the shows then. Sorry for the inconviniance - Charlie

Update. Well, the server has been updated, now their working on getting all the files moved over to the new address, so it shouldn't be too much longer.

Oh boy. What I do for the show. It's 2am, and I gotta be up in 4 hours. I'm nut's I know. Ep 4 is out. In it we get some words of wisdom from confucious, who fixed his audio this time around. We also have an interview at a lesbian party, with the birthday girl herself, a good friend of mine, and we play some podsafe music in memory of the recently departed Richard Pryor. I also give out a quick encoding trick, and make plans to start teaching Avs. If i'm forgettting anything else then screw it, it's 2 am and i'm about to pass out. Finally finished editing episode 3, first time using a new piece of audio editing software, so it took me a bit longer than it should have... but, it's done, if you notice any rough spots on the edit, blame Charlie, Brian or my new program becuase it sure as hell wasn't my fault... anyhow, here's a summary of what we've got for you this time 'round...

In this episode we jump into the Patricia Santangelo vs. RIAA case, avi2dvd encoding techniques, the starting of our must buy christmas list and holiday music, learn japanese language number two (with special guest Confucius, yes he's chinese) and comcast rant of the week. Portable Media Expo

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be able to visit the portable media expo, aka the podcast expo. Got some pics while I was there and I thought I'd share em.
Starting from left to right, we have me and Leo Laporte, then a picture of Adrina Thorpe, a singer who's music we played a podsafe song of episode 2, a nice shot of Soccergirl with the body paint. Next level down is a pic with me and Dawn and Drew, then another pic of Soccergirl doing a live podcast, followed by a pic of the vcrew from The Amazing Adventures Of Dr. Floyd doing a live podcast. On the third level down we have a pic of Leo Laporte during a commercial break for his Kfi Tech guy podcast, a pic of me with Dawn from Dawn and Drew, and a pic of Bibb and Yaz doing a live podcast. On the last level of pics we have Leo Laporte doing some interviews with Dawn and Drew, Brother Love, from the podsafe music network, and Adrina Thorpe.
The whole experiance was a blast. I got to meet tons and tons of fellow podcasters, and learned loads about all the stuff you can do with your podcast. Hope you enjoy the pic's. (and fyi, yeah I noticed the dude in the front of the pic of Brother love picking his nose, that's why I used that one)

Well, we (as in brian and Charlie, since i am on vacation and forgot my mic) have completed our first 2 shows for the public, with few hitches, they are getting better by the show, and the rants are getting louder, we still have some bumps to get through and are working out some new ways of doing things, so keep and ear out, and keep listening, we'll just keep getting better. Maybe I'll actually appear in one of these shows too :P
